How to Succeed in Evil by Patrick E. McLean

How to Succeed in Evil is not a self-help page for the maladjusted. It it is the story of Edwin Windsor, Evil Efficiency Consultant. He's like Arthur Andersen for Supervillains.

  1. Josh says:

Man, that was awesome. I really should have seen that coming.

    “Suprise! You’re being sued!”

  2. Noggy says:

Leave it up to Topper to put the fun back into law. God bless that amoral bastard.

  3. Alan Gains says:

    …dear Lord…

Topper is perhaps the only character who I can actually see doing this. And he is all the more awesome for it. I can’t wait to actually see this court case go down, though. Just a thought; how does one punish the nigh-invulnerable?

  4. Josh says:

Re-listening, I realized something. It was one of those thoughts that I knew all along, I just now put into words.

Excelsior’s motivations are all selfish and egotistical, while Edwin actually worries about the costs and injuries that might befall others. On the other hand, Edwin is motivated by money, while Excelsior actually tries to save people.

A nice little tug-a-war between results and means, one that shifts though-out the book. Edwin regularly uses, blackmails, and otherwise engages in “evil” behavior, while Excelsior has started acting to satisfy himself and his ego, instead of being satisfied with doing good.

    • Alan Gains says:

Indeed. The real trouble comes, I think, when and if he loses this case and realizes that the law quite often benefits men like Edwin, instead of men like himself. That the world doesn’t really care that he’s saved people, just that he assaulted a semi-innocent man he considers to be just another villain. I think we had an excellent bit of foreshadowing on this topic a few episodes ago, but I’ll stop there, just in case I’m right.
