How to Succeed in Evil by Patrick E. McLean

How to Succeed in Evil is not a self-help page for the maladjusted. It it is the story of Edwin Windsor, Evil Efficiency Consultant. He's like Arthur Andersen for Supervillains.

  1. Mark Watson says:

I can’t believe someone did not think of this a long time ago. It would seem such a simple plan would have been executed long ago out of sheer desperation by a city that simply cannot handle this kind of tax loss and insurance payout.

Still, it took Edwin to get it done- and for that he deserves some credit. Topper gets Team Lead cred.

I’m confused, didn’t he put some kind of controller on the Cro when Topper captured him with strippers in an earlier chapter? Wouldn’t it seem to make more sense for him to have done it earlier when he had a chance? I’d been thinking he’d had the Cromoglodon more or less under his control for about half the book…

“[Edwin] longed for all his machinations to be inexorable rather than spectacular..”
My absolute favorite line in the whole novel — in both this version and the previously released version. Brilliant writing, Patrick. Indeed, good words in the right order.

  4. Akash says:

    Mr. Mike,
In the majority of the book Edwin has HARNESSED the natural tendencies and choices of the Cromoglodon for profit WITHOUT actually controlling them.

    Now he does.

  5. He did gain control of the Cromoglodon at one point by implanting him with some kind of device, but that was in the original podcast series, part of the Ondemnity storyline. In the novel, he turned him into a billboard instead. (So yeah, the novel appears to be a completely separate continuity from the original podcast series. Edwin also had a completely different secretary in the original series; I like Agnes better.)
